Connecting through Maths
Many newcomer students in secondary school performing above average have a preference for science subjects: maths, chemistry, physics, biology. They have great potential and, with the right guidance, are a real asset to Dutch society and the labour market.
Because this group does not draw attention with disruptive behaviour, it gets overlooked and is extra vulnerable. That is exactly why we invest here.

How we work
Four ways of working
- One-to-one lessons
- Students are helped by experienced teachers with science subjects, but also with Dutch and English.
- Group lessons
- Students work in small groups with a subject teacher and get tutoring wherever they need it.
- Student helps student
- Students experience one of the best ways to learn: explaining to each other. That way learning becomes fun.
- Self-study
- We create a calm and warm space for independent study. That is how you discover that studying can be enjoyable.

What our students think of VvW
“VvW creates a safe and active environment for students to learn and study, while that can be harder at home because of a lack of motivation and all the distractions. From year 1 onwards, students get help with schoolwork and develop skills like planning and learning how to learn. Older students in particular are open to sharing their knowledge and experience.”
SemihAlumnus “The atmosphere is really nice and friendly. Being together with your friends motivates you to study better. The teachers are very kind and good at their subjects. We go bowling, laser gaming and do other fun activities together.”
Osman K.Alumnus “The tutors really take their time with you, and you notice they want you to get it. If I don't understand something, I can always ask. That really helps me understand the material better and be prepared for tests.”
LeylaAlumna “I found VvW educational and fun. I learned a lot of new things and it was nice to work together. VvW helped me get better at dealing with other people.”
